Identifying Sciatica Symptoms and Causes

Identifying Sciatica Symptoms and Causes

There is a nerve that branches from your lower back and travels through your hip and buttocks and then down each of your legs. If you have any issues that compress the nerve, such as a bone spur, a herniated disc, or narrowing of the spine, also known as spinal stenosis, it can cause a painful condition called sciatica. We provide sciatica treatment at Chaney Chiropractic Clinic.

Common Causes of Sciatica

During your first visit to our chiropractor, we will discuss your lifestyle and ask certain questions to determine if you have any of the risk factors associated with sciatica. These factors include:

Age: As you get older, changes occur in your spine. It isn't uncommon to develop bone spurs or a herniated disc, which are the most common causes of sciatica.

Obesity: If you are overweight or obese, your weight will put extra stress on your spine. This extra stress can cause changes in the spine, which can trigger sciatica.

Prolonged sitting: If you live a sedentary lifestyle it can put you at risk for sciatica.

Your job: If you have a job that requires you to lift heavy objects, sit in a vehicle all day, or twist your back often, you are at risk or sciatica.

Diabetes: If you have diabetes and your blood sugar is not under control, it can cause nerve damage. If the sciatic nerve is affected, you can develop sciatica.

Symptoms of Sciatica

If you have any of the sciatica risk factors, our chiropractor will discuss your symptoms. The pain goes from your lower back into your buttocks and then down one of your legs. This pain can vary from sharp to burning to excruciating. The pain is often worse after sitting for a long time or when you cough or sneeze. Some patients with sciatica report occasional pain that feels like an electric jolt.
